The essence of evil in Pan's Labyrinth

Evil is portayed in two ways: through people and through mystical creatures.
The evil portrayed in human form is through the character of Vidal. It is clearly evident how evil he is; that is foreshadowed when he first meets Ofelia and grabs her hand. I knew from that moment, that even though a Captain is supposed to be strict, that him being like that was too strict and over the edge. The way he treats others, especially Ofelia, reflects this. It is ironic, however, that this source of evil helps Ofelia on her pathway to salvation. If it weren't for Vidal shooting Ofelia, she never would have been able to be reuntied with her family.
The evil in mystical form comes with Pan. The last task he asks of Ofelia, of sacrificing her brother, is the most prevalent evidence of that. That shows how evil can be masked in a friendly form. Ofelia trusts Pan almost wholly, up until that point. It is only until she is faced with the limits of her own moral compass that she challenges his authority.
