What is resolved and what is not:
(I felt a table would be the best way to express this task)

Problems

Resolved?

Death?

How/Why?

Carmen Pregnancy w/son

The baby was born at the expense of Carmen

Rebel’s lack of food, supplies, & medical treatment

The rebels managed to steal food from the Fascists after creating a distraction.

One of the rebels has an injured leg

No

Doctor had no choice but to amputate the leg.

Caught Mercedes’ lover

No

X

Doctor ended his suffering using his injection.

Caught Mercedes

Yes

She escaped after adjusting Vidal’s smile

Doctor in danger

No

X

Vidal shot him after he revealed his true allegiance.

Rebels VS Fascists

XXX

After the Rebels launched a successful siege, they eliminated Captain Vidal. They won (at least for their local struggle) but lost many of their men.

Ophelia & her Journey

Yes

She successfully completed her tasks, although the last one involved her own death.

The ending of the movie evokes extreme sadness in the midst of their victory. This powerful combination of triumph stirred with extreme sadness helps the audience truly feel the ambivalence of the Rebels' emotions.
