(I felt a table would be the best way to express this task)
Problems | Resolved? | Death? | How/Why? |
Carmen’s Sickness | No | X | She almost recovered until the creature under her bed was burned. She died soon after. |
Carmen Pregnancy w/son | Yes | The baby was born at the expense of Carmen
Rebel’s lack of food, supplies, & medical treatment | Yes | The rebels managed to steal food from the Fascists after creating a distraction.
One of the rebels has an injured leg | No | Doctor had no choice but to amputate the leg.
Caught Mercedes’ lover | No | X | Doctor ended his suffering using his injection. |
Caught Mercedes | Yes | She escaped after adjusting Vidal’s smile
Doctor in danger | No | X | Vidal shot him after he revealed his true allegiance. |
Rebels VS Fascists | Yes | XXX | After the Rebels launched a successful siege, they eliminated Captain Vidal. They won (at least for their local struggle) but lost many of their men. |
Ophelia & her Journey | Yes | X | She successfully completed her tasks, although the last one involved her own death. |
The ending of the movie evokes extreme sadness in the midst of their victory. This powerful combination of triumph stirred with extreme sadness helps the audience truly feel the ambivalence of the Rebels' emotions.
