Unresolved Ending in Pan's Labyrinth

I liked the ending of the movie because it's open for interpretation. As we said in class, we are not sure if Ophelia imagined going to her kingdom at the end or if it really happened. Personally, I feel that Ophelia did not imagine the fairy and the faun in order to escape reality because the two worlds crossed over several times throughout the movie. The mandrake, which was given to her by the faun, helped her mother to get better and when it was destroyed by the captain she tragically died. Also, Ophelia uses the piece of chalk in the real world. Both of these magical objects, which have power in the real world, are evidence that Ophelia didn’t simply make it all up in her head.
On the other hand, at the end her stepfather cannot see the faun when Ophelia is talking to it, which can lead us to believe that the entire magical world was imagined by this young girl going through an extremely difficult situation. The fantasy- like ending contributes to the overall dream like feeling of the movie, and I would like to think the ending was not simply her imagination.
