Holy Shrek!

When i signed up to read Shrek as my childrens book i knew it was going to be different. I was not however expecting it to be THAT different. After reading The Amazing Bone and Dominic i knew William Steig to be an uplifting writer who throught his lovable animal characters tells a story. This was not uplifting or lovable and it is even hard to find the story. If Shrek was ugly and found his love it would be understandble that the moral was there is someone for everyone. Since Shrek was ugly and loved it, and was mean and cruel to everyone it is hard to say where the story or the tenderness lies. When going into this assignment i promised myself that i would not compare it to the movie but i cannot help myself due to the mere fact that the movie is so much better. They take things that happen in the book and totally turn them around. There are even parts that are totally opposite in the book than in the move. One can almost gather that the film makers saw the story and hated it but loved the name so they made a new movie with a better story and the same name. Yes i am possitive that there is an underlying moral to the story but no matter how hard i looked a cannot find it and it would be absolutley rediculous to expect a child to find it in this near scary book that was perhaps uglier than it's own main character.
